Established
as a Mission in 1882, St. Augustine Church was served for many
years by the clergy from Mission San Jose. In 1901, it was made
a parish with a resident priest, and throughout the years that
followed the church and congregation became closely identified
with the community itself. The lovely old white-frame structure
on Rose Avenue was often photographed, sketched or even painted
on canvas by those who recognized its architecture as belonging
to an early California era. The warm, traditional interior was
the scene of countless marriages, baptisms and other ties of the
church, administered to families who virtually lived out their
lives within the embrace of this one church.
