Building
Our Family of Faith
The Catholic Community of Pleasanton Background In the late 1980's, this parish community decided that the Church facilities at St. Augustine (on Bernal Avenue) had become too small to accommodate the growing Catholic Community in and around Pleasanton. After much discussion, it was decided to build a second Church facility on property that the Diocese of Oakland had procured a decade earlier on Stoneridge Drive. We developed these facilities to meet our most immediate needs. First, we built office space, meeting space, and a chapel in which smaller Masses and liturgies could be held. Then on March 5, 2000, we celebrated the first Mass at the new church of St. Elizabeth Seton. John
Paul II Activity Center Capital Campaign The new building
will contain a full-size gymnasium in which our Catholic Youth Organization
(CYO) teams can practice and play their inter-parish games. For many years,
our CYO program had scrambled to find and rent gym space where our teams
can practice and play. The small gym at St. Augustine Hall is not regulation
size and can be used only for thid and fourth grade games. Also, it is
only minimally available during weekday afternoons and evenings because
of the Hall's use by our Faith Formation program. Presently, our CYO basketball
program involves 534 participants and 124 coaches and volunteers. There
are 32 boys teams and 20 girl teams, third grade through eighth grade. A committee composed of members of the Parish Staff, Parish Council, and CYO have unanimously chosen John Miller Architects to help design our new Center, chosen from a list of four approved architects by the Diocese of Oakland. The total cost of this new facility, while not firm, is estimated at approximately $5 million. This cannot be met through the ordinary income of the parish. Therefore, we are planning to launch a parish-wide capital campaign. Prior to this launch, we are seeking input from all registered parishoners. The costs of any further building will require the commitment of the vast majority of our parishioners. The main source of funding for building the church at St. Elizabeth Seton had been through three-year pledges made by some 1,018 of our parishioner families. A similar effort, but for possibly five years, will be required for this and any future building projects.
