The
Catholic Church Deeply Rooted in Faith
The
Roman Catholic Church has a rich tradition, dating back two millennia.
It is a faith with Jewish roots, with Jesus as its founder, Peter
as its first leader, and the present pope as Peter's successor in
our day.
The
church today urges all its members to develop an enduring love for
the Bible and to make the sacred scriptures central to their prayer
lives.
Jesus
Christ is our Savior and our model. He is Son of God and Son of
Mary, who walked on the water and yet wept for a friend. Jesus is
both divine and human, perfect in all respects while still like
us in every way except sin. By the gift of His Spirit, He empowers
us to continue His work on earth.
The
Church's official public prayer of worship is called the liturgy,
a term derived from a Greek word signifying some public service
to be performed by the citizens of the state. In liturgical prayer,
members of the Church gather together and worship in a formal way.
The main expression of our liturgy is called the Mass.
