HOLY WEEK 2026

​Please note that Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and The Great Vigil of Easter will be celebrated at St. Augustine Church.
Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Great Vigil of Easter should be viewed as one celebration held over three days.  The three days are complimentary as they recall aspects of God’s love shown for us through the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. These are the holiest days of the Church year – central to the Catholic faith - culminating in the Great Vigil of Easter.  All are invited and encouraged to attend all three celebrations.​ All Triduum services will be webcast. 
HOLY THURSDAY
Thursday, April 2 (There are no confessions or daily Mass on this day)
  • 8:30 AM at St. Augustine Church: Morning Prayer
  • 8:00 PM at St. Augustine Church: Mass of the Lord’s Supper
We begin the Triduum by celebrating the Mass of the Lord’s Supper.  On this night we receive into the Church the holy oils to be used in the coming year.  Following the Gospel, we ritually fulfill Jesus’ new commandment of love and service for one another in the washing of the feet.  This year we will have several stations throughout the church so that all present may participate in ritual foot washing. In this beautiful and powerful moment, we demonstrate our willingness to place ourselves at each other’s service as Christ has asked.  Following Eucharist, we solemnly process to The Altar of Repose.  The consecrated bread and wine reserved for Good Friday will be exposed here until midnight for personal prayer.  This recalls how, after the Last Supper, the Lord journeyed to the Garden of Gethsemane to spend the evening in prayer until his arrest.​ The Triduum continues with…

n the second day of the Triduum, we remember the Lord’s passion and death on the cross.  We begin the day with Morning Prayer at 8:30 AM. We will offer The Biblical Stations of the Cross Devotional Service at 12:00 noon and our Cross Walk through downtown Pleasanton beginning at 4:30 p.m.

In the evening, at 8:00 p.m., we will celebrate the Official Liturgy of the Church for Good Friday, which includes the Liturgy of the Word, Veneration of the Cross and a simple Communion service.  This is the only day of the year the Church does not celebrate Mass.  The Sacrament we receive is that which was consecrated on Holy Thursday. The Triduum continues with…
HOLY SATURDAY & THE GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER
Saturday, April 4 (There are no confessions, daily Mass or 5:00 pm Mass on this day)

  • 8:00 PM at St. Augustine Church: The Great Vigil Of Easter
This is the climax of the Triduum. On this holiest night of the year, at the high Mass of the entire year, we celebrate God’s victory over sin and death through the central event of our faith - The Resurrection of Jesus Christ!  On this night we welcome the risen Christ in the Easter fire, hear the ancient stories of our faith, and joyfully initiate new members into the Catholic Church through Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist.  Once again, we sing “Alleluia” and declare our faith anew. ​

Our Easter celebrations continue on Easter Sunday with Masses at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM at St. Augustine Church. We will also have Mass in St. Augustine Hall at 10:15 AM.

There will be no 4:00 PM or 6:00 PM Mass on Easter Sunday.
 
The Tri-Valley Korean Catholic Community will also have Mass at 9:30 AM in Korean and 11:00 AM in English at St. Elizabeth Seton Church.
EASTER SEASON
Sunday, April 5
While Lent is observed for forty days, the Feast of Easter lasts for fifty days (seven weeks) concluding with the Feast of Pentecost. In this season there are no readings from the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament). Rather, we hear from the Acts of the Apostles, the adventures of the early Church, as news of the Risen Christ is carried throughout the world.  ​
