Position Overview The High School Confirmation and Youth Group Coordinator works directly with the Faith Formation Office Manager and the Pastoral Associate in providing religious education that supports the mission of our parish and stays within budget restraints. The High School Confirmation and Youth Group Coordinator successfully manages the curriculum, volunteers, and the implementation of programs that support the teachings of the Church and encourage opportunities for involvement in parish life.
Essential Job Functions Communication
Issues communications in various forms (mail, email, Flocknote, Realm, webpage, phone, etc.) to increase contact and flow of information among all who participate in the programs.
Provides an opportunity for program evaluation from the parents, the catechists, and the students at the end of the year.
Integrates and complements the activities of the parish community into both the Confirmation and Youth Group programs.
Volunteer Management
Recruits, interviews, trains, supervises, and evaluates volunteers for all levels of involvement in the Confirmation and Youth Group programs.
Performs orientation and training of catechists on use of textbooks and supplementary resources.
Provides in-service opportunities and ongoing formation for catechists in conjunction with the requirements set by the diocese.
Resources, assists, and supports parents in their role as the primary religious educators of their children.
Supports the catechists and volunteers in their efforts of bringing the formation of our faith to our children by being present at confirmation and youth group classes and events.
Provides daily support for catechists:
Classroom set up, which may include moving furniture, making sure basic supplies are restocked, supplying audio-visual equipment and any other miscellaneous needs.
Discuss individual lesson plans with catechists as needed.
Substitute in classroom when a catechist is not available and substitute arrangements have not been made.
Monitor catechists in classrooms.
Address disciplinary issues as needed and meet with parents to discuss discipline issues.
Curriculum
Plans and oversees the curriculum and activities for the Confirmation program in consultation with the Pastoral Associate regarding discussion groups, large group sessions, service projects, liturgical rites specific to the Confirmation process, retreats, and sponsor programs.
Plans, organizes, and implements, in conjunction with the Pastoral Associate, youth activities regarding discussion, content/input, social recreational activities, service projects, retreats, etc.
Develops and implements an interactive curriculum that would engage High School students.
Provides guest speakers and retreat leaders when necessary.
Plans and implements social events on a regular basis.
Oversees confirmation celebrations and attend Sunday Mass throughout the year.
Is present when Youth Group activities are in session to facilitate any catechist needs and to secure the facility.
Organizes and presents orientation meetings for prospective Confirmation candidates, parents, and sponsors.
Is available for drop-in hours for conversation, discussion, and one-on-one ministry.
Keeps up to date with all Diocesan policies regarding Confirmation and Youth Ministry and updates the programs accordingly.
Attends and encourages others to attend appropriate Diocesan Youth Ministry events, meetings, etc.
Keeps informed of related community events, including youth activities of other churches.
Provides leadership training and in-service for adult and youth volunteers so they can confidently lead Youth Group gatherings.
Implements the yearly parish theme/goal into the High School Confirmation and Youth Group programs.
Works in a spirit of cooperation with other Faith Formation coordinators and programs.
Integrates and complements the activities of the parish community into the Confirmation and High School programs.
Ensures that all curricula for the Confirmation and High School Youth Group programs support the teachings of the Catholic Church and the Parish mission statement.
Spiritual and Professional Growth
Encourages ongoing catechist formation in conjunction with the requirements for catechist certification outlined by the Diocese of Oakland.
Continues professional development and spiritual enrichment through professional reading, seminars, conferences, retreats and institutes, while keeping continuing education costs within budget guidelines.
Administrative Functions
When necessary, greets and assists parishioners and visitors, referring them to appropriate contacts.
Receives phone calls and responds to messages on a timely basis.
Supervises the tracking of attendance and the contacting of parents when children miss classes.
Purchases supplies for Confirmation and Youth Group programs.
Gives input to office equipment purchases when needed.
Assists in registration of families for Faith Formation programs.
In coordination with Pastoral Associate and Faith Formation Office Manager, develops the annual budget for the Confirmation and Youth Group program.
Timely submission of bills and consistent review of department expenses to ensure compliance with budget.
Parish Leadership
Integrates and complements the activities of the parish community into the Confirmation and Youth Group program.
Acts as an advocate for high school youth to the parish and community.
Helps and coordinates with ministries to aid in volunteer hours for confirmation students.
Ensures Confirmation and Youth Group programs support and compliment the activities of the parish.
Is a positive spokesperson for support of parish decisions, including expansion projects, new ministries, parish functions, facility updates, etc.
Non-Essential Job Functions
Participates in Faith Formation meetings and staff meetings and activities.
Attends meetings as necessary with ministry leaders and other parish leaders.
Attends Diocesan meetings related to Faith Formation & attends parish functions when possible.
Requirements
A practicing Roman Catholic with an informed understanding of conciliar and post conciliar teaching of the Second Vatican Council and how it applies to the mission of the parish.
BA Degree in Religious Studies, Theology or related field or the equivalent in education and experience is preferred.
Excellent interpersonal, communications, public speaking, and presentation skills
Must be able to work independently with little supervision.
Strong management/supervision experience.
Excellent software skills, including Microsoft Office (or equivalent), Realm, Flocknote, etc.
Must be able to have flexibility in work hours.
Excellent organizational skills required. Must be able to multi-task and think clearly under pressure, possess good record-keeping skills and utilize strong time management skills.
