What is a Small Christian Community (SCC)? Small Christian Communities (SCCs) are gatherings of parishioners in groups of up to 12 people where faith is shared, listened to, and celebrated. A place where members can articulate the connections between faith and their daily life.
Coming together in a Small Christian Community empowers members to grow in faith and have a greater sense of belonging to the parish, and to build supportive relationships. In this way, a SCC encourages one’s personal faith journey while also reflecting our communal journey as people of God.
What do SCCs do and how often do they meet? SCCs meet to pray, reflect, and share together. Group size is limited to encourage relationship building and to allow each person to share (or not) as they may wish. Most groups meet in person, but some groups meet via Zoom. In Lent, SCCs are encouraged to meet weekly and use resource materials that the parish offers. While some SCCs meet only during Lent, others meet once or twice a month throughout the year. The frequency depends on the preference of each group. The parish offers resources for their use or SCCs choose their own materials.
In Lent 2023 what will SCCs do? In Lent 2023 SCCs will use materials provided by the parish to reflect on the Sunday readings for Lent. The themes for each week of Lent can be summarized as follows:
Week 1 – Led by the Spirit, we begin our Lenten journey.
Week 2 – Hearing God’s call, we know his care for us. Do not be afraid.
Week 3 – Living water to satisfy my spiritual thirst.
Week 4 – Finding rest for my soul to simply “be” / and healing when it is not expected.
Week 5 – In all our human emotions, Jesus is with us.
Week 6 – Keeping watch with Jesus / or with others in a time of need
